8/10/06: Jackass 2: The Trailer (2006)We’ve never laughed longer than during
Jackass: The Movie—but that’s not why we were so happy to see
the trailer for
Jackass 2. Of course, the barrage of clips from the upcoming film still seems properly conservative. There are animals being exploited, and a suggestion that universal health care is an unnecessary burden on taxpayers—as long as you have friends willing to yank out your bad tooth via sports car.
But what we really like about the
Jackass 2 trailer is the set-up before the action. It’s an impressive parody of an old-fashioned grindhouse exploitation ad. “When it was first released in 2002,” says a stern voiceover, “people were outraged.” We see shocked citizens as the narrator recites disapproving reviews of the unidentified film.
Our first thought was of
House of 1000 Corpses. Then we recognized
Bam Margera’s mother just as the trailer cited two brilliant quotes:
“a sad commentary on our degenerating culture”
—Christian Spotlight on the Movies
“a disgusting, repulsive, grotesque spectacle.”
—Richard Roeper, Ebert & Roeper
That’s pretty subversive. Take a condemning quote from a Christian organization, and put it next to a diss from one of the most reliably Leftist film critics in America. It seemed like a fine goof on the humorless attitude that any modern liberal has to have towards guys having fun.
Then the
Jackass 2 trailer got even better. There seemed to be something typically smarmy about Roeper’s quote. So we looked it up, and here’s the unedited true opinion:
“Jackass: The Movie
is a disgusting, repulsive, grotesque spectacle, but it’s also hilarious and provocative. God help me, thumbs up.”So we’re reminded that a good Leftist can’t even be comfortable with enjoying great slapstick. Seems kind of sad.
And now check out
the comments under that Christian Spotlight review. You’ll find a lot of Christian teens proudly endorsing
Jackass: The Movie, without finding it necessary to qualify their enthusiasm. So what have we learned? There are Christian school kids who can easily afford to be more hip than Richard Roeper. Hardly news, we guess, but still a pleasant reminder of who’s having fun out in the world. How many more days until September 22nd?
Make it your own: Dude, what were we just saying? The movie isn’t even out yet. If you need to see the trailer on the big screen, then you might still find it attached to the conservative classic
Little Man. And if you haven’t seen the first theatrical
Jackass, don’t bother renting. You’ll want
your own copy.
