2/28/07: The L Word “Lexington and Concord” (2007)We weren’t too pleased when National Guard Captain Tasha Williams (played by Rose Rollins) showed on our favorite bad soap opera about gorgeous lesbians in Los Angeles. We were particularly miffed over the scene where the proud soldier—freshly back from Iraq—had violent flashbacks about the war. That’s not the kind of fantasy sequence we want to see on
The L Word.
But on this past Sunday night’s episode—whaddya mean you were watching the Oscars?—the sexy soldier actually helped to derail the series’ typically pathetic politics. It’s yet another glamorous party, and Tasha is there with her new girlfriend Alice (played by series regular Leisha Hailey). The newly-transgendered Max shows up with a dopey gal named Grace who’s got a t-shirt that declares, “War is terrorism with a bigger budget.”
This leads to one of the most moronic scenes in the history of
The L Word. That’s saying something, since
The L Word is frequently as moronic as it is sexy. All the gals start to quote their favorite t-shirt slogans that address America’s immoral war on the same Islamic fanatics who’d gladly blow up every hot babe that’s ever even auditioned for the show. The whole scene is so ludicrous that it might mark the first time that
The L Word has shown a sense of self-awareness towards its own vapidity.
Fortunately, Tasha doesn’t go along with the idiocy. She expresses her discomfort, and Alice actually apologizes. Then everyone gets distracted while a poor heterosexual woman has to break up with her evil boyfriend.
And then Alice and Tasha get back home, and they’re kind of arguing, and Tasha even gets to bring up the simple fact that American soldiers don’t enjoy killing people before Alice tries to make some stupid point about Dick Cheney, but Tasha puts a stop to that with the kind of excessive force that may not have made our country great, but sure does a lot to make cable television really good.
We probably won’t bring this show up again unless Tasha gets the gals to join the military and start fighting for their right to have lesbian sex.
Make it your own: This season’s box set will come out on DVD eventually. If you get Showtime, the episode is probably on every night this week. And here’s
a clip where you can see how Tasha’s commanding nature is doing wonders for the reputation that military women have with
The L Word’s lesbian audience.
