  5/4/07: Spider-Man 3 (2007)

Okay, here’s the deal: There’s a whiny Leftist film critic who’s developed serious Bush Derangement Syndrome, and even got some attention when he declared that last year’s The Break-Up ($39 million domestic opening weekend) was set to be a box-office bomb—most likely because he’d heard that Vince Vaughn had once said something that was almost patriotic.

Anyway, the same deep thinker is now all upset that USA Today did an article on Spider-Man 3 director Sam Raimi—and the paper didn’t even report that Raimi gave $900 to the George W. Bush campaign in 2004. It’s “as if such things are peripheral,” weeps our brave critic.

Never mind that Raimi gave $1,000 to Barbara Boxer’s campaign. Also—as a fan of the critic’s site felt compelled to comment—Raimi’s a Jew.

So let’s do our part to support Sam Raimi. Perhaps we can beat the blacklist and go to the multiplex and give Spider-Man 3 a chance at becoming a commercial success. It might even be possible to use our capitalist clout and make Spider-Man 3 nearly as successful as The Break-Up.

And you’ll get to see Bruce Campbell, too.

Make it your own: Seriously, Spider-Man 3 is in theaters now. Help out a brother.

Seriously, I dig your blog. You need more readers! This is too neat a perception on culture to not be picked up on by others.

By the way, how did you get the spell checker in your comments page?

You do realize that this doesn't narrow things down in the least, right?

My current favorite is Nathan Lee from the Village Voice. He was so busy trying to squeeze a plot summary of 28 Weeks Later into his critique of U.S. foreign policy, he somehow didn't notice that one of the main characters was a boy and not a girl. Despite being referred to as "the boy" throughout. Lee did give the movie a thumbs-up, but apparently only because he saw it as an indictment of the Bush administration.
