The big-screen G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra has nanobots, catfights, and a few too many flashbacks. It also crams in a decent love story amongst a lot of mayhem that’s pretty patriotic (although I question the wisdom of intercepting a missile that's heading towards Beijing). The G.I. Joe squad is an international organization, but they’re taking orders from General Hawk. He’s played by Dennis Quaid. That's instead of, say, Jean Reno, which is what you’d expect in a pandering Leftist military fantasy. There’s even a fun scene where the G.I. Joe squad is kicked out of France after they’ve saved Paris from being destroyed—and just because that stupid Eiffel Tower got knocked over in the process. There’ll probably be a lot of snide Leftist critics making Team America references in your local alt-weeklies.

Meanwhile, New Yorkers looking for more adult fare should check out William Lustig’s amazing program of manly films from the 1970s—beginning today at the Anthology Film Archives and running through August 14th.
