One more thing…

Eric Bana is shot by his father-in-law (who’s hunting deer) at the end of
The Time Traveler’s Wife. That doesn’t count as a spoiler. Hollywood’s politics are predictable enough that you know that the father-in-law will lead to Bana’s foreshadowed death once the character is identified as “a Republican and a hunter.” The father-in-law is also a wealthy businessman. Bana reports all this to his own father, who is a miserable alcoholic—yet still manages a judgmental scowl at this sad news.
This is the kind of thing that makes me wish I paid more often for my movie tickets. Nothing would make me happier than to leave a screening of
The Time Traveler’s Wife or
Julia & Julia and politely ask for my money back once there’s a moronic token slur on Republicans. I’m no fan of the GOP myself nowadays, but I just know that the producers of those films don’t really want my money. In fact, I’m sure they’d appreciate everyone making sure that conservative audiences don’t finance their proud filmmaking.
Same thing goes for concerts where someone on the stage ridicules your politics. Show respect to the artist. Respect their principles. Go get your money back. They don’t want you, and they must not want your money. Enough people do that often enough, and it’ll be like town halls at the box office every night.
